Marjorie Franken (Obituary) (compliments of Peggy Sass Malchow)

Marjorie Franken was born in Kansas and died in Altadena, CA, on November 22, 2011. After she graduated from CSU, she moved to Alamogordo, NM, to teach math. She later went to Kenya as a Peace Corps volunteer in 1974. She completed her doctorate in anthropology at the University of California – Riverside in 1986. She taught anthropology at Arkansas State University, and then at several colleges and universities in California, including the University of California – Riverside, where she was an Assistant Professor at the time of her death, and Whittier College. Her doctoral dissertation was based on the history and forms of dance in Kenya, and in particular, how dances reflect gender roles in a culture and she remained interested in dance throughout her career. She had three dogs that enlivened her home. Her sister, Pat, preceded her in death.
